MANDELA THE GREAT@90. Former South African president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday 18th of July,2008.The icon of Africa whom by being an anti-apartheid activist and leaderof the African National Congress, spent 27 years long years in prison for being an activist against cruelty.

Convicted for crimes inwhich he was accused of leading the struggle against apartheid. Born on July 18,1918 to the family of Chief Henry Mandela of the tribe of Tembu. Mandela wa extensively educated and qualified as a lawyer in the year 1942. With his ambition of politics from his childhood, he therefore joined the ANC in 1944 and actively involved in resisting the ruling party's apartheid policies.

In 1960, the ANC was banned due to the resistance to the government of the day policies. He was tried alongside 8 other members of the ANC for plotting to overthrow the goverment by violence. On June 12,1964 he and the 8 others (Leaders of the ANC ) was sentenced to Life to life imprisonment. On receiving the sentence, Mandela gave a speech from the dock which he titled " I a prepared to die". The man of courage, gave a speech that gained international reception.

With such a long time spent in prison, the call for freedom became apparent and many organizations and indivduals such as Paul Robeson became actively involved in the call for Mandela's release.

His time in prison did not pass by without Mandela making utmost usage of his period in prison, such as acquirng skills, proper eating attitude, exercises in the morning and time management skills.

Nelson Mandela was released on February 11,1990 and following his release, he started the campaign for reconciliation which led to multi-racial democracy. Even up onto this day, at 90 years of ag, he still campaign for total freedom from poverty, underdevelopment etc.

Due to his foresigt for the world, Nelson Mandela the Great was elected President of South Africa and the most amazing part of the story is that Mr Mandela served one term.This is unusual or African leaders.

Madiba has served the world for years and now he is leaving a good legacy for all of us to carry on with the fight for freedom from tyranny.
