3 policemen, others killed in Oshodi OPC clash
By CHRISTOPHER OJI, MATTHEW DIKE and FAVOUR ONWUKA

policeThree days after factional leader of the O’Odua Peoples Congress, Dr. Frederic Fasehun announced that there is now permanent peace and the absence of rivalry between the two segments of the body, there arose mayhem and bloodbath in OPC in the Mafoluku area of Lagos yesterday.

About three policemen who allegedly went to make peace between two factions of the OPC were killed and their bodies burnt and dumped in front of their station while the vehicle they went with was riddled with bullets allegedly fired by the OPC men.

Three other members of the warring groups also lost their lives in the fight while several others were seriously injured, reports said.
The two factions nicknamed ‘Weapons’ from Branco and “Nothing Spoil” from Airport Road, Mafoluku, Oshodi had been quarreling over an undisclosed issue.
Saturday Sun gathered that on Thursday, an OPC group from ‘Weapon’ alleged that ‘Nothing Spoil’ faction pulled down a structure in their base.

It was gathered that yesterday morning, ‘Nothing Spoil’ group went on solidarity mission to explain to ‘Weapon’ that it was not responsible for the pulling down of their base.
It was further gathered that during the peace move, argument ensued between them, which snowballed into fisticuffs, which led to casualties.

An eyewitness said: “Charms, guns, machete and other offensive weapons were freely used. Three persons died while several others were injured”.
The source claimed that police patrol team who stormed the scene was attacked and three policemen were killed while others were seriously injured.
He said the policemen and the three OPC members were burnt beyond recognition while others escaped with bullet wounds.

As at the time of compiling this report, the charred remains of the policemen were still in front of the Makinde Police Station.
Although an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and a contingent of policemen had been stationed at the scene, residents were seen fleeing the zone.

Economic activities were grounded as shops and corporate organizations closed down for fear of being hit by stray bullets or the fear that their offices would be looted by hoodlums.
Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba said only one policeman was killed. He said the three persons are suspected to be members of the warring OPC.
Mba who disclosed the death of the policeman was a bad development said: “It is quite unfortunate that policemen who went to maintain peace were attacked.”
He urged Lagosians to go about their normal duties as the situation has been put under control.
