The Former Boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has been demoted from the rank of an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Commissioner of Police by the Police Service Commission. He was demoted by 139 others highly placed police chiefs.
Rtd DIG Parry Osayande,Chairman of the
Commission, said in a statement at Abuja on Tuesday,5th of August that the Police Commission found the awarding of promotion to the EFCC former Boss and 139 others disturbing and irregular. It is confirmed that the promotions were been given to the said persons before the Police Commission members were inaugurated.
Mr Osayande claimed that the promotions were not based on established criteria and considerd it a special favour to the persons concerned. This he stressed is s breach of section 153 of the 1999 constitution and the Police Service Commission Act 2001.
Osayande said, ìt has therefore been the cause of disillusionment, agitations and indiscipline within the Nigeria Police Force. He said after due consideration of President Umaru Musa YaríAdua’s vowed commitment to the rule of law and in order to guarantee a level playing field for all members of the police force, the commission re-examined the guidelines for promotion for all the ranks ranging from Deputy Inspector-General of Police to Constable.
This undue elevation of the said people has led to series of protest by Police Officers such as neglecting issues of high importance.
The Police Service Commission’s chief stressed that special promotion must be based on exceptional performance such as act of bravery.
The chairman regretted that such decisison was reached by the commission, which he claimed will allow for transparency, perfomance of statutory duties and functional method of appoitment in the Nigeria Police Service.
All those affected including Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has been asked to assume their former positions.
